About the Book
For sex therapy to be successful, it requires a strong commitment on the part of clients to complete exercises outside the therapy session itself. The therapist can work on interactional, historical, or behavioral issues in the office, but it is the couple's own work at home, the combination of communication, reflection, and participation in therapeutic physical exercises, that truly determines the outcome of their therapy. That's why Lonnie Barbach, Ph.D., has applied her many years of knowledge and experience to design this non-threatening, step-by-step therapy program that addresses the four most common sexual dysfunctions found among couples seeking treatment. To start, the therapist's introductory package consists of a therapist's manual and a set of three* of each of 4 workbooks. The workbooks cover the following topics:
Erection Control - Covers self-monitoring, kegel, and appreciations exercises. Includes Caring Days, Scripting, "Yes" and "No" masturbation, Partner Communication and Sexual Exercises.
Ejaculation Control - Similar to Erection Control. Covers specific masturbation and couples exercises appropriate to the particular dysfunction, including "Foreplay" and "Enjoy the Moment"
Discovering Orgasm - Contains masturbation exercises for women, each tailored to a specific difficulty (e.g. never had one, never with a partner, inconsistently orgasmic). Partner communication and sexual exercises included.
Increasing Sexual Desire - Designed to be used only after the therapist sees that the major issues in the relationship have been addressd. Includes a program from abstinence to love-making.
Designed to fit a 12-week program, all four workbooks allow each client to develop skills in privacy at their own rate, removing the "performance" pressure that is so often at the root of sexual dysfunction.
