About the Book

African American Relationships, Marriages, and Families is a historically and culturally centered text designed for relationship, marriage and family educators and therapists who work with African American singles and couples. Complete with numerous exercises, the book helps singles and couples increase their self-awareness, partner awareness and respect, and appreciation for difference. It also helps foster effective communication and conflict resolution skills, showing readers how to develop and maintain healthy relationships, marriages, and families. No ground is left uncovered in Dixon’s thoughtful and considered analysis.

Reviews

"Dixon’s text may well become the text on African American relationships, marriages, and families. It not only reviews the historical/social context of contemporary relationships for the academic but provides numerous end-of-chapter exercises for personal exploration the clinician might recommend for clients."

- David Knox, Ph.D., co-author with Caroline Schacht of Choices in Relationships (9th edition)

"Patricia Dixon’s African American Relationships, Marriages, and Families, is a highly distinguished work of scholarship, providing the best discussion of African American relationships to date. I believe that Dixon’s work will become a standard that will be read by all of those who sincerely want to understand the African American way of relationships, marriage, and families."

- Molefi Kete Asante, author of Erasing Racism: The Survival of the American Nation and The Afrocentric Idea

"Patricia Dixon’s masterful, comprehensive work should be read by all who work with African American couples. We intend to use it with our team of marriage educators who serve the African American community in the Archdiocese of Chicago. It will better equip us to take our ministry even deeper."

- Andrew Lyke, Coordinator of Marriage Ministry for the Archdiocese of Chicago
